Massage

What is massage good for?
Massage aids circulation and helps increase the range of motion of the joints in the body. Massage can also relieve tension in tight muscles that can lead to minor aches and pains that interfere with everyday activities.

What is Okazaki Restorative Bodywork?
Okazaki Restorative Bodywork (ORB) is a style of massage taught through the Danzan Ryu Seifukujitsu Institute. Originally developed and taught by Master Henry Seishiro Okazaki, this style of bodywork is a fusion of traditional Asian and Hawaiian massage.

What is involved in a typical ORB massage?
A basic massage begins with the client face down between sheets on a massage table. The neck, back, and arms on each side of the body are thoroughly worked. This is followed by sessions on the back of the hips and legs. The client then faces upward for work on the front of the arms and legs.  The session ends with a tension reducing massage to the neck and scalp.

Do you do “deep tissue massage”?
I like to work at a depth that my clients are comfortable with. I have found through the years that a client’s tolerable depth can depend on many factors, including injury, and can change over time as they become accustomed to the massage.

Is this like Swedish massage?
Some elements of Swedish massage are present in this style, but clients who have experienced Swedish massage will notice a difference. All styles of massage, however, aim for the same goals – the health and well being of the client.

Is this the only style of bodywork that you practice?
This is the main style that I practice, but I have also trained extensively in Tui Na, the Chinese Medical Massage. Tui Na focuses primarily on injured body parts as opposed to whole bodywork and can be, therefore, used to supplement ORB massage. In addition, someone may come to me complaining of a sore shoulder but does not want to try acupuncture. Tui Na would be a good alternative.

What would the Tui Na session be like?
Using the above example of the sore shoulder, a Tui Na session would begin with a gentle massage of the shoulder tissues. The shoulder would then be taken through range of motion exercises and stretches in order to try to restore normal movement.

How often should I get a massage?
As one of my instructors in acupuncture school used to say, “Very depends.”  For general health and well being, monthly massages are recommended. If you have a very physically demanding job, or have constant, chronic pain, a more frequent massage may be needed.
